During Literature Circles Time, my group is currently reading a book named 'Julie of the Wolves' by Jean Craighead George. It is about an Eskimo girl called Miyax(Julie). She is a thirteen year-old girl, who ran away from her husband and is now lost on the North slopes of Alaska. She is accepted by a pack of wolves, and love them as her family. I have written a diary entry about Julie and how she feels when she found out that the wolves have left her. We used some special Eskimo words from the book.
Dear Diary,
I cannot believe that the wolves have left! Eeelie! How can I live without them? They were the ones who killed the caribou, helped me to survive by accepting me in their pack. I remember little Kapu's furry face, tickling whiskers, and all! Two nights ago I had slept with little Kapu, ilaya, wolf, close by my side, giving me warmth and comfort. Now I feel nothing but coldness. Bitter, bitter coldness. I do wonder where the pack went. Oh, how I regret I didn't follow them when Amaroq had called for me!
I want to scream and yell like a fanatic. I would die to just grab my ulo knife and stabbing and puncturing at the sod which built my house. How angry I am with myself!I knew I couldn't tear at my camp since I would perish, but it doesn't really matter now if I die. Nothing does if the wolves are gone.
Like my dear father Kapugen had said, you go on and find a way. Something like that, I can't remember, it was too long ago. I think that I might be able to live, but with not much of a chance. I think I might still go on a little further because now (thankfully) I have a compass, some food, a camp and fuel and matches for a fire.
Oh, Amaroq, my adopted father, how could you leave without me? Well, partly it is my fault. But why didn't he come back for me? Why didn't you think of me, your daughter? Your poor, POOR daughter, all alone on the slopes of Alaska. Maybe Amaroq was not as 'wealthy' as he seemed. Maybe he was heartless. Would Nails come back for me? Silver? No, I shouldn't think so. What about abandoned Jello? Never, it seems. I shall just have to wait until luck comes my way.
I will go and smoke a bit more caribou for supper, and go straight to sleep.
Good night,
Miyax

My Crisis Chain

Yesterday Kyoung Hwa and I created a crisis chain. Our main crisis was 'Earthquakes'. A crisis chain is a chain where there is a main crisis and you need to put links on it. The other links show the different crises that happen after the main crisis. It is kind of like a mindmap on crises. We made a lot of links to put on it. Some of it goes like this: Earthquake-tsunami-flood-pollution-sickness.
We did a lot of thinking for our chain and worked very hard to think carefully about the possible crises after each other crisis. I really enjoyed making it!
